Reconstructive breast surgery is a cosmetic surgical procedure used to reconstruct a woman’s breast or breasts, typically for women who have undergone mastectomies. Generally, the new breast is constructed to match the remaining natural breast by using either breast implant (the prosthetic reconstruction or heterologous reconstruction ) or by using tissue from elsewhere in the woman’s body (the autogenous reconstruction) – either of which are used to create the breast mound.
Generally the prosthetic reconstruction is simpler to do than the autogenous reconstruction. After a pocket is created, tissue expander is positioned and is generally increased in size over 3 to 6 months until the desired size and shape is achieved. Next the expander is replaced with the permanent breast implant. An autogenous reconstruction requires the tissue from either the back, buttocks or thighs and is moved and shaped to the new breast to create it.
